What is Refund Raleigh up to this year?
DIVEST FROM POLICE INJUSTICE AND INVEST IN ECONOMIC JUSTICE
In 2020, we were so proud to begin building the kind of Raleigh we dream of with you — a Raleigh where we prioritize our collective resources to keep our people safe, housed, and well, and a Raleigh where we stop bankrolling the police and the violence they cause our communities. Since late summer, after we made our demands to divest from RPD, we have been working on envisioning, strategizing and yes, calculating the numbers, to see what Defunding the Police and Re-Funding Raleigh could feasibly look like:
In partnership with the Raleigh City Workers Union (UE Local 150), we are demanding a 1) $20/hr minimum wage for all city workers and 2) free bus fare for all people in Raleigh to get to work, to school, and to live fulfilling lives. The city of Raleigh could pay for these demands entirely, just by reducing the number of Raleigh Police Officers by 30% (a total cost to the city of $30,026,000, which is less than 30% of RPD’s yearly allocated budget from the city of Raleigh).
